Faust

...A cult movie that absolutely everybody must see!
"I always loved silent movies. I was not a specialist, but I loved them. And when I started directing, I became really fascinated by the format - how it works, the device of the silent movie. It's not the same form of expression as a talkie. The lack of sounds makes you participate in the storytelling."

Michel Hazanavicius

Michel Hazanavicius is correct, we actually have to "read" the silent movie, I don't mean the texts but the whole story. It is such an experience to watch a masterpiece like Nosferatu or Faust during our days (that 3d and special effects are so overrated)...

Enjoy!

Music and Graphics

Everything started to change when I got into chiptune in around 2008, I was aware of LSDJ stuff, but the more I listened, the more I found stuff written for other machines. I remember really liking some C64 track which in turn got me interested in heavy electronic stuff. I've always liked the more dirty and hard side of music. After that I found out about ZX spectrums music scene(the Demo Scene helped me a lot), and since I'm no musician at all ( but I like to listen!!) I completely jumped into Pixel-art and chip-lo-FI-art.

Ladies and gentlemen...

Chelsea Girl 1 Shirts
Chelsea Girl was one of my first ZX Style graphic artistic T-shirts.

Melissa Pixel Shirts
"Melissa" was supposed to be just a test.

Another successful test.

Chelsea Girl 3 was an experiment that I did mixing
alpha layers + Zx spectrum downgrade graphics.

Same experiment I did in Chelsea Girl 3.

A very low-resolution image that I painted over.

I tried different Technics mixing photos+painting+lo-fi graphics...

Until the point that I got minimalist!...

And a bit baroque...layers over layers and effect over effects!

zx spectrum Elite

Talking about Zx spectrum games...Have you guys ever played Elite? ..no let me give you a glimpse of it:

From Wikipedia:

Elite has often been treated as the yardstick by which subsequent space trading games have been measured. However, it was not the first such game; the genre-defining Star Trader had been written as long ago as 1974. The space trading genre combines space-borne combat with a "buy low, sell high" freight transport system and the ability to use the profits to purchase ship upgrades.
The player initially controls the character "Commander Jameson", though the name can be changed after the game is saved. The player starts at Lave Station with 100 credits and a lightly armed trading ship, a Cobra Mark III. Most of the ships that the player encounters are similarly named aftersnakes or other reptiles. Credits can be accumulated through a number of means. These include piracy, trade, military missions, bounty hunting andasteroid mining. The money generated by these enterprises allows players to upgrade their ships with enhancements such as better weapons, increased cargo capacity, an automated docking system, an extra energy bank and more.
In the game universe, stars have single planets, each with a space station in its orbit (in contrast to the complex planetary systems that have since been observed). Stars are always separated by interstellar distances. Travel between planets is accomplished by hyperspace jumps, and is constrained to those within range of the ship's limited fuel capacity (7 light years).
Fuel can be replenished after docking with a space station (although this is a challenging task without a docking computer, since it requires matching the ship's rotation to that of the station). Players can upgrade their equipment with a fuel scoop, which allows raw fuel to be skimmed from the surface of stars—being described by the manual as "a dangerous and difficult activity", but in practice a fairly simple process—and collecting free-floating cargo canisters and escape capsules liberated after the destruction of other ships.
While making a hyperspace jump between star systems, the antagonistic Thargoid insect race may intercept the player, forcing his ship to remain in "witch-space" to do battle with their smaller invasion ships. If the player has insufficient fuel to hyperspace jump to a nearby planet, he is trapped in witch-space forever.
An extremely expensive one-shot galactic hyperspace upgrade permits travel between the eight galaxies of the game universe. There is little practical difference between the different galaxies. However, in some versions it is necessary to travel to at least the second galaxy in order to access the game's missions.

Elite includes several optional paid missions for the Galactic Navy. One requires tracking down and destroying a stolen experimental ship; the other involves transporting classified information on the Thargoids' home planet, with Thargoid invasion ships doing their best to see that you do not succeed.

There are also more modern versions of the same game, that use fancy graphics and what have you, while staying fairly close to the spirit and feel of the original.

When 16 bit computer systems came out, a sequel, "Frontier" was developed. When I got an Amiga back in the early 1990's, I made sure I got this too, and I spent many happy hours doing boring repetitive trade runs and building up to a fully kitted out, and near as damn it unhurtable Panther Clipper.

Frontier is also now available as shareware.

In 1990 some people stuck with punk, people like me that hated MTV and all that grunge commercial stuff, all our reference from music was from 70's and 80's punk bands. If someone asked about what we were into, definitely we had to answer "punk" sometimes "post punk".
This "post punk" element start to spread, and some bands pointed that their bands were alternative/punk, it was an evolution from punk to alternative/experimental...Minds were opening for a more artistic avant-garde attitude!
Beat Happening; I think is an exponent of that time...a great band, very lo-fi, punk rooted style but it had something more...

Knight Lore the game

I have to mention in this blog the game "Knight Lore", because is the name of my Zazzle Store and it was very influential in my life. Back in 1985 or 86 I had a "zx spectrum" computer and I used to play lots of arcade games, but one day my mind was blown away by this game called "Knight Lore".
Knight Lore was not a regular arcade it was the first isometric game that I ever played, and was not just about jump and running it was an adventure game, we had missions to complete!
The plot of the game was simple: Somehow we became a werewolf, cursed by a powerful spell and at Knight Lore castle we have to help Melkhior the wizard to free us from the curse. But there is a trick, Melkhior is dying and we just have 40 days to achieve the missions and be free from the curse by the good wizard.
During the time that I was playing back in the 80's I was living my "Led Zeppelin phase", "Knight Lore" and "The Battle of Evermore" were glue together in my mind.
And the graphics were awesome! the werewolf and the castle all in 8bit!
Until today (along with Tir na nog ) I think Knight lore has one of the most elegant graphic in game design history!

So...to pay my respect to this very special game I did some Tees for the hardcore Knight Lore enthusiasts like me!

The werewolf (spelt as "werewulf" in the game)

The Presentation Screen of KL

This last tee was an idea of my friend Jacob, we had a conversation about the loneliness of some game characters and the werewolf of Kl came up.

Jacob - "That guy is really f** up!...I mean he is basically alone the whole game. There are just some forms of energy and guards (that want to kill him!) to make him company."

krullnther - " So, who you think that would be his ideal mate?"

Jacob - "In Zx world, in my opinion, for the KL Werewolf: Phantomasa!"

krullnther - " I know! Phantomasa would be yours ideal GF in real world too..."

Some weeks ago I made a little research over the internet looking for drawings made by inmates in prisons all over the world, and I found some really meaningful art. The major part of those drawings were about sex and religious motives. I looked at the drawings trying to imagine the person behind it, what this person was thinking?... Them I come up with the idea to make some pretty good tees about crude drawings made by unknown prisoners from different parts of the world, enjoy!

One of the Muses that I found, she looks pretty and the artist drawn it in a stylish way!

This picture shows Jesus Christ (I guess) It was carved on the cells' wall. Another religious related image, scriptures and religious citations... This one I could not identify what is about, It seems to be some kind of game, but the pattern is beautiful!! Jesus again, now for sure because of his crown of thorns. This drawing is from an old Japanese military prison, it is well painted and we can conclude that was made by those in charge and not by the inmates.

Another Muse drawing, sexy! I found this piece of art in some African prison. It catches my eyes because you can sense the tension between the leader figure at the center and the religious(?) with his knees down at his side...We can guess a life of humiliation and a relationship of hate and love among those figures...very powerful stuff!

I didn't find many information about this picture, but it is sure well made and it has a strange feminine aura. And here we go, pure madness...some prisoner in Japan wrote a book in his cell!! This drawing is crude, unskilled drawn but...man you can feel the prisoner's anger and pain! art!!
